Is it really happening? Could it be? Maybe…just maybe…
I think we are getting 2 guys who can consistently score. Henderson is sliding into the role of being “that guy” on the team. The guy who can get buckets when we need them has arrived and this latest stretch of basketball that he has played has been spectacular. I’m not going to lie. After watching the first quarter, I was going to stop watching. Seriously, I was saying to myself, “Self, if they are going to play like this, they don’t deserve a recap”. Eventually the 1st quarter ended with a staggering 39 to 20 quarter. I don’t subject myself to that sort of abuse normally, but I AM a Bobcats fan, and I have stood true to them since inception, so I continued to watch. We chipped away at the Magic, and by the end of the second, the numbers were looking up. As 31 to 19 2nd quarter had us down by 7, and there was a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel. The 3rd and 4th quarters were more of the same (32 – 24 and 31 - 26). Fortunate for us that the 3-point shooting that had killed us in the 1st never returned for the rest of the game.
Keep in mind that this game was one that was a battle to see who will reign supreme at the bottom of the NBA. Last season, being the worst got us the #2 pick. Maybe being #2nd worst will get us #1. Time will tell, right? Then there’s that whole worry about who do we take? Noel? Bennett? Shabbazz? McLemore? This is not a draft in which we will find the next LeBron, Kobe, or Durant. We can get a really good piece to add to our team. I am currently working on a piece to discuss what unrestricted free agents will be available this summer, and unfortunately, the pool isn’t that deep there either. I really feel bad for Rich Cho because he was instructed to get 1st round picks and get as many as he could. Well, he’s done it, but he could have never foreseen that this would be one of the weaker drafts that have occurred in the past few years. I just hope that Jordan gives him the needed time to do what he is fully capable of. I’d give Mr. Cho 2 more years. If we aren’t in the playoffs in the 2014-2015 season, then shame on Rich. I believe that we will be there, and we will be competitive. Game recap you say? Well, there was lots of scoring by us, some good defense, an unbelievable alley oop dunk from Gordon to McRoberts (should be #1 on SportsCenter tonight), and BizBlocks galore. Take a gander at the team numbers:
Walker = 34pts/9 assists/7 rebounds/2 steals/2 blocks
Henderson = 34pts/2 assists/7 rebounds/1 steal
Biyombo = 11pts/3 assists/7 rebounds/1 steal/3 blocks
Gordon = 8pts/3 assists/3 rebounds/1 block
McRoberts = 6pts/8 rebounds/3 assists/0 turnovers/1 block
Gilchrist = 6pts/6 rebounds/1 block
Hendo and Walker get the Trade Street Post co-Game Breakers of the night award. When you see teams winning games, typically they have at least 2 guys that can light it up any given night. Fans, I think we may at least 2 of those guys. Honorable mention goes to Biyombo on the night. His defense and hustle in the 1st half is what kept us in it and made the run possible.
You’re seeing this team come together as a unit. Saturday’s loss versus the Pistons was a heartbreaker. Sunday versus the Heat was expected. Tonight’s win, I expected. The next game versus the Knicks I would expect to be very close. If we get more consistent play out of Henderson and Kemba, it will be close. We need the rest of the team to step up to win it. I believe we can win.
