So here we go with the second installment of "Which Way Do We Go?" Matt is going to share his feelings on which way he feels the Bobcats should go with their #2 draft pick this season.
There are plenty of reasons why the Bobcats should trade the #2 overall pick in the draft, but there's one thing you simply cannot count out: potential. There have been plenty of rumors on what Rich Cho and company will do. They could draft Thomas Robinson, a player who has very well peaked and is undersized at his position. He could turn into the next Charles Barkley! Probably not, though. The Bobcats could draft a sure-fire shooter in Bradley Beal. They already tried that, his name was Adam Morrison and once he got to the NBA...he wasn't so sure-fire. If you look at the talent that the Bobcats have drafted in the past, one thing stands out; they were all incredible in college. Were the Cats picks REALLY that bad? No, they weren't. You cannot tell me that a player that dropped 30+ pts a game in college and throughout the tournament doesn't make you drool. Steph Curry made us all drool when he did it. Adam Morrison bombed, hard. Steph Curry didn't, simple as that. Bad luck? Pretty much. Bad drafting? Absolutely not.
Here we are on the cusp of one of the most important draft picks in the history of the team. What do they do? Simple, you draft the player with the talent, skills, heart, and determination of the only other player that the Bobcats have been proud to have. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is Gerald Wallace. I know, I know...he's not literally Gerald Wallace. There are PLENTY of differences between the two, but he's got more similarities than differences. Hard-nosed defender. Killer athleticism. Consistent shooter. Creates his own shot and DEMANDS respect. If you watched Kentucky play at all this past year (and you should have...good God!) you'll know that they never ran a single play designed to get him the ball. Well, Matt, how did he score? DUDE WORKS! He has the drive and skills necessary to be a star. I don't think that Gerald Wallace is his ceiling. I think Gerald Wallace is his FLOOR. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is no joke.
What better player to come in and jump-start a team than a player whose focus begins with defense and ends with domination? The right coach will simply help him excel at what he's already good at, and players with endless drive, like Gerald Henderson, will put him in the mindset of consistent improvement. Rich Cho exclaimed after the lottery that he once picked Kevin Durant with the second pick in the draft. Do I think that MKG is going to be the next Kevin Durant? No, but I do think he's got the potential to be a future All Star and the potential to make free agents WANT to come here. Development is the name of the game. Upside and potential are the best we can hope for.
